11 Things to Do in Houston When it’s Cold Outside
Houston’s not known as a city with many cold days, but it does happen. So when the weather gets too chilly for your tastes, there are plenty of indoor activities that can keep you busy and entertained all day long. Especially if you’re someone who likes to be outside as much as possible like I am.
But just in case those aren’t enough to satisfy your needs for some time outdoors, here are 20 things to do during Houston’s winter season.
Go ice skating at Discovery Green.
There’s a free-to-use, open-air ice rink at downtown Houston’s Discovery Green. It includes areas for curling and hockey, along with public skates. The rink is usually open from late November through early February.
The Children’s Park is not too far away from the skating rink, where there are plenty of places to warm up after skating or playing in the snow. There’s also an interactive fountain that kids will enjoy. Hint: bring cash for food truck purchases — they don’t take cards!
Check out the Farmers Market at St. John’s School
The market runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine (rare during Houston winters). It’s open through April and includes booths with fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, seafood, and more. Stick around for live music in the amphitheater after shopping.
Discover the Museum of Printing History
You can find the museum at 1324 W. Clay St. in Houston, just north of downtown. From their website, “The Museum is housed inside a 1928 two-story Art Deco former residence that has been lovingly restored for exhibits and educational programs.”
There are many ways to experience the museum, including self-guided tours, children’s activities, and even an after-hours adults-only “Night at the Museum” once a month.
Go downtown and discover art at Market Square Park.
It might not be as busy on weekends, but it’s still worth checking out. You can wander through booths selling handcrafted goods, visit the farmers market or even just sit and watch people go by.
There’s also a lot of entertainment at Market Square Park, including live music, dance performances, art shows, and even aerobatic performers.
Go ice skating at the Galleria Mall.
Another outdoor rink, but this one has a roof over it! The Galleria ice skating rink is open from November through January and includes public skates, skate rentals, and private parties.
Go see a movie at iPic Theaters.
iPic theaters offer a unique movie-going experience that includes reserved seating, luxury reclining seats, gourmet food and drinks, and even blankets and pillows if you want them. This theater is the perfect place to escape the cold weather and relax while watching your favorite movie.
Visit the Children’s Museum of Houston
The Children’s Museum of Houston is a great place to visit when it’s cold outside. There are plenty of exhibits and activities to keep kids entertained for hours. Some of the attractions include a grocery store, construction zone, health center, and more.
The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except for Thanksgiving and Christmas (they’re closed on those holidays).
If you like shopping, visit Memorial City Mall.
This mall is located near the iheart radio tower off Gessner Rd., just west of I-10. There’s plenty to do at Memorial City Mall — you can visit the AMC Theatres, Dave & Busters, Fuddruckers, or Cheesecake Factory.
Go bowling at Bowl & Barrel in City Centre.
Bowl & Barrel is a great place to go bowling with friends. It’s located inside City Centre near Memorial City Mall. There’s plenty to do at Bowl & Barrel — you can visit the arcade, eat at the restaurant, or just bowl. The bowling alley has lanes for all skill levels and offers shoe rentals and ball rentals. You can also reserve a lane for private parties.
If you’re really adventurous, go skiing or snowboarding at Greatwood.
If you’re really adventurous, go skiing or snowboarding at Greatwood. There’s a small ski resort with chairlifts and trails (best for beginners). It’s located inside the Four Points area near Katy and west of Houston.
Go see a play at the Miller Outdoor Theatre.
The Miller Outdoor Theatre is a great place to see free plays and concerts. They often have a variety of events scheduled throughout the year, including plays, concerts, dance performances, and more. The theatre is located near the Houston Museum of Natural Science and has a seating capacity of 6,500.
Summary
Houston is a city that offers many opportunities to explore. One of the best ways to do so is by heading outside and enjoying some fresh air. Whether it’s hiking at Greatwood, shopping in Memorial City Mall, or just taking your kids out for an afternoon ice skating session, Houston has plenty to offer during the winter months (or any time of year). It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for indoor activities like bowling at Bowl & Barrel or outdoor pursuits like skiing at Greatwood – there are plenty of things to keep people entertained when the weather gets cold!
