Herbs to Grow in Your Apartment
Even if you don’t have a lot of space, you can still grow your own herbs indoors. Herbs are easy to grow and add flavor to food, so they’re a great way to spruce up your cooking. Here are some herbs you can grow in your apartment.
Mint
Mint is very easy to grow, and in most cases, self sows and comes back year after year in the same spot! There are many varieties: apple mint, orange mint, peppermint – so you can really pick your flavor. Mint is a must for mojitos or any kind of iced tea or lemonade.
Parsley
Parsley is an herb that comes back year after year and is very easy to grow, even for a new organic gardener. It’s great in salads and tastes like a cross between basil and celery (in my opinion).
Basil
Basil (sweet basil) is one of the best herbs to keep on hand. It has a fairly short window of usability (can’t store it in the fridge like other herbs). But it tastes amazing and is essential for making pesto.
Cilantro
Cilantro (also known as coriander) is one of the most versatile and easy to grow herbs. You can eat the leaves, seeds, and stems! It’s excellent in Mexican food – I love adding it to salsa and guacamole for an extra kick.
Oregano
Oregano is another herb that comes back year after year! It does best in dry soil, so let it dry out between watering. I love to add oregano to homemade pizza sauce and sprinkle a bit on top of my pasta dishes.
Rosemary
Rosemary is a hearty herb that will grow to the size of your container if you let it. It does best in well-drained soil (if the soil is too wet, it will yellow and be less flavorful). I love to use rosemary in my homemade chicken stock – it adds a great flavor!
Sage
Sage is another herb that comes back year after year and can become larger than your container. I like to use sage in my turkey stuffing, and it is great for making chai tea.
Thyme
Thyme is one of the most common herbs used in cooking. It does well with minimal sunlight or water (it’s drought-tolerant!), so it doesn’t require much attention at all! A little thyme goes a long way – I like adding a few sprigs to my homemade chicken stock.
Chives
Chives are another herb that comes back each year and is suitable for the soil as it is very low maintenance. I love chives on baked potatoes or use them in my homemade tartar sauce! They’re great on eggs as well – I dip my eggs into the sauce and sprinkle the chopped chives on top for a fancy but simple breakfast.
Ginger
Ginger is a fun herb to grow indoors because the root will continue to grow, and you can harvest it over time! It’s easy to regrow if you choose to buy ginger at the grocery store instead of growing it yourself – just cut off a piece or two, let it sit in some water for a few days, then plant it in some soil.
