Moving Etiquette You Should Know

When you’re moving, there are a lot of things to remember. From packing your boxes to arranging for transportation, it can seem like there’s a lot to do. But one of the most important things to remember is how to act when you’re moving. Here are some tips on etiquette for moving.

Plan ahead.

Before you start packing, you need to sit down with a pen and paper and write out a plan for relocating your belongings. This will not only save you time in the long run, but it will also make moving day go much more smoothly. Write down what items are being moved by whom at what time. If you are using a moving company to help with your relocation, make sure that you have a complete inventory of all the items that will be packed into their truck as well as what each item weighs.

Label your boxes.

Have a marker and tape in hand before you even begin packing so that you can label every box before placing it in the moving truck. This will save you time on moving day when all of your boxes are packed in a jumbled mess, and it can become very difficult to remember where everything is.

Pack your belongings carefully.

You do not want to damage any of your belongings while they are being moved, so take care when packing fragile items. To maximize protection, place old towels or blankets into the bottom of boxes that contain delicate items. You should also wrap fragile items in bubble wrap before placing them inside their respective boxes.

Transport your belongings safely.

Ensure that your belongings are secure during transit by strapping down loose objects or packed boxes with rope or twine. If you use a moving van or rent a storage unit for your items, tie down the door, so it doesn’t open during transit. If there are any signs of damage on the truck when you arrive at your new abode, take photos before signing off on the delivery to ensure that you have proper evidence of damage if there is an issue later.

Unpack your belongings quickly and efficiently.

The longer you wait to unpack, the more likely you are to get overwhelmed by all of your unpacking tasks and not be able to finish on time. Sort items into three piles: things that you know where they go (put them away immediately), items that don’t belong anywhere and can be donated, and items you aren’t sure where they go. Place the last pile in a room that is not being used so that it will be out of the way while you sort the items into their correct spaces.

Don’t forget about the little things.

Before you sit back and relax when your move is complete, double-check to ensure that you and your movers haven’t forgotten any of the little things like hardware, screws, or curtains. It would help if you took a walk through your new home to ensure that everything was brought over and nothing was damaged during the move.

Summary

Moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to. These simple steps will not only help to make moving day go as smoothly as possible, but they will also take a massive weight off of your shoulders. And by taking care of the little things at the end of your move, you can rest assured that everything is just where it should be. The more organized you are throughout the moving process, the smoother your relocation will go.
